Australia is one of the most popular destinations in the world where thousands of Skilled and Professional Migrants settle permanently, or on a temporary basis every year.

Australian Immigration may seem to be a complicated process if you have just started the research about Australian Skilled Visas.

Understanding Australian Skilled Immigration Process

There are few steps that you need to be familiar with for the Australian Skilled Immigration process.

Search your Occupation

You must understand first:

What is a Skilled Occupation List?
What are the types of Skilled Occupation lists?
Whether your Skilled Occupation list is on one or more occupation lists?

In short, there are more than thirty occupation lists in Australia and you may be eligible to apply if your occupation is available on one or more occupation lists.

For example, if you are a Mechanical engineer, you need to check that your occupation “Mechanical Engineer” is on how many lists.

You must note the list names on which your occupation is available like MLTSSL, STSOL, Subclass 189, Subclass 190, Subclass 491 etc.

Identify the VISA Sub-classes

Once you check your occupation on our occupation’s skilled list, you must note down the names of all the Sub-classes on which your occupation is available.

For Example:

If your occupation is available on MLTSSL, you may be qualified to apply for Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189.
If your occupation is available on STSOL and also available on the Australian State are Territories List for Subclass 190 then you may be eligible to apply for Subclass 190 to the respective State or Territory.
If your occupation is available on ROL or on the State and Territories list for Subclass 491, then you may be eligible to apply to the State and territories for Subclass 491 Visa.

Note: Each Visa Subclass and List has its own Eligibility and Points criteria.

In short:

If your occupation is on the MLTSSL. You may apply for Subclass 189. If the Visa is granted, you may live, work or study anywhere in Australia as an Australian permanent resident.
If your occupation is on any State and Territories Subclass 190 list. You may apply for Subclass 190 and if granted, can live, work, study in Australia as a permanent resident in the State or Territory that sponsored you for your Visa application Subclass 190.
If your occupation is on any State and Territory regional list. You may apply for Subclass 491 and if granted, can live, work, study in Australia as a Temporary Resident in the region that sponsored you. You may apply for Permanent Resident Visa after completing your requirements while living in region on Subclass 491 Visa.

Eligibility Criteria and Points Calculations

Now that you have checked your occupation on all Skilled Occupation Lists and noted down the lists name or Visa Subclasses on which your occupation is available. The next step is to find out the eligibility requirements for each list or Visa type and calculate your total points.

At this stage:

You should calculate your total points as you have to compete with other applicants on points score. More points mean higher chances of Visa.
Note that you would be getting 10 additional points if you are eligible for Subclass 190 and 15 points if you are eligible for Subclass 491. This essentially means that the Australian Government will add these points to your base points just because you have shown willingness to live in a particular state or a regional area.

The minimum points score required is 65. However, you should try to achieve the maximum score to compete with other applicants.

Skills Assessment and English Language Test

All previous steps were actually part of the research work to find out whether you can qualify for the Australian Visa or not.

However, at this stage, you should start preparing the evidence to prove your skills.

You should start your skills assessment process and go for the IELTS or PTE test to prove your English proficiency points.

Note that there are many skills assessment bodies in Australia. The main bodies are:

Australian Computer Society (ACS) for IT or ICT professionals.
Engineers Australia (EA) for Engineers.
VETASSESS for most other occupations.

Expression of Interest, ROI & Nomination Application

You will apply to the Department of Home affairs for your final Visa Application after the above steps are completed.

The Department will once again assess your complete application and will inform you about the outcome of your Final Visa application.

Final Visa Application

You should skip this step if you want to apply for Subclass 189.

You need to submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) and Nomination applications for Subclass 190, Subclass 491 and most other State and Territory Sponsored visa streams.

Note that some States and Territories require “Registration of Interest” in addition to the EOI applications.

This step essentially means that the respective State or Territory would assess your documents and claims at this stage and if approved, you can apply to the Department of Home Affairs for a final Visa application.

Preliminary assessment by an experienced case officer:

Once the two-step application form on our website or CRM is completed, an Australian based Case officer will be assigned on the completed application for preliminary assessment. At this stage, the case officer will either decline or accept the application based on the information provided in online assessment form. We will determine whether your occupation is in the existing occupation list and your total number of points that you could achieve to apply for the EOI. If accepted, a case officer will contact the applicant through CRM and will call to discuss further details about the applicants education, job experience and other requirements. We have Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Pushto and Chinese speaking case officers in our team to talk in your language.
